Ostinato

Have you seen this video on Pinterest?

This rotation I am labeling ostinato in 2nd grade.  At the end of our lesson, I have had my kids count the ostinati while watching the video.  After watching we discuss how many we heard.  They love this and are still talking about it.

If you are going to show this video to your kids, I would stop it just past a minute.  I usually stop it when Harry and Snape argue back and forth.  If you're anything like me, you're wary about the word "bomb".

Have you come across any other good examples of ostinato on YouTube?

  1. Yes I have seen this video and have shown my students. It is a great video! So witty and we all love Harry Potter! Good idea to use it as an ostinato example.

  2. Ha - I do the same thing. I edit out the bomb. They always say, "What was making the noise?" I just tell them it was Snape's watch. :)

    1. Oddly enough my kids haven't asked but it has been a race to squeeze everything in this rotation. They probably did not have time but I wouldn't be surprised if I hear it during the next class.

  3. I use the singing horses to model ostinato. Great on an IWB, and it's a nice connection to SATB, as well!

  4. Try the Muppets Habanera. It's cute & the ending isn't as inappropriate for 2nd grade.

  6. For a longer melodic/harmonic/rhythmic pattern, try Bobby McFerrin's site with his song "Don't Worry Be Happy".
